What's Next? Rhythm Kids (ages 4-8)

Rhythm Kids® is our new music, movement and drumming program that helps children complete the pathway of early childhood music development from birth to age 8. Fun-filled Rhythm Kids classes naturally support your big kid’s rhythm development and help them prepare for formal music lessons. Classroom activities engage children as they solo, work in ensembles, play new patterns, and improvise. All of this supports your child’s social and listening skills, self-expression, and self-confidence like only music can.

This Spring 2021, children will attend one weekly high-energy class for 40 minutes filled with music games, rhythm pattern play, drumming, dancing and more to engage their creativity. A drum of some sort (ideally a djembe) will be useful and we can help you find a Djembe through a few vendors where discounts are available for RK Families.  Parent attendance is optional but encouraged. All families will receive a songbook, CD, download as well as access to interactive online video tutorials. If you've taken Music Together® classes, some of the music will be the same but explored in new ways! However unique to Rhythm Kids are a whole new collection of animal themed rhythmic songs and patterns. This winter we explored the Elephant Collection & this Spring features the Jaguar Collection!

Big Kids classes lay the foundation for Basic Music Literacy, complementing music instruction in school or instrument lessons, and leading to a lifetime of joyful music-making. It may also be the appropriate next step for your children after mixed-age classes  but before formal music instruction. The curriculum includes solfège, solos and ensembles, folk dances, harmony singing, vocal development, and drumming. In a safe, fun environment, your child can experiment with new activities like conducting and improvisation, story songs, and game songs.

Each family receives a Big Kids songbook, CD, solfège cards, and HomePlay activities, so that the entire family can continue the fun and learning at home and parents can stay connected with what the child is learning in class.

Parents are welcome to come to any class, but they must be participants (not observers). However, parents/caregivers must come to the child's first class. They are also encouraged to come to the last class of every semester (show and tell) and are encouraged to come to the last 5-10 minutes of every class for the lullaby, Goodbye, Ask Me About and distribution of that week's HomePlay pages. Two adults (the teacher + one parent) will always be present in class in order to accomodate the needs of this age group. If you would like to volunteer as a classroom parent, let us know!
